Croatian Dalmatian Potato Salad (vinegar based)

This really is the best, most authentic Croatian potato salad (vinegar, not mayonnaise based) recipe. It's deliciously simple & even better the day after. It goes beautifully with grilled meat or fish and provides a nice balance to other fatty/oily foods.

Ingredients
8 medium (salad suitable) potatoes
3 tbsps white vinegar
3 tbsps olive oil
1 small white onion sliced thinly
Salt and pepper

Method
1. Boil potatoes (with skins on) for 25 mins in salted water. Let cool until just warm.
2. Slice the onion very finely and place in a salad bowl. Grind a little salt and pepper over it and mix through.
3. In another bowl whisk the vinegar and oil together.
4. Peel potatoes by slipping the skins off with your fingers.
5. Cut potatoes in half and then into thickish slices. Put into the bowl with onion.
6. Gently fold in dressing and add salt and pepper as required.

Ideally let the salad rest for a few hours before serving at room temperature or chilled.

    1. Just ordinary old white vinegar. Surprising, but it really is the best in this recipe.

  7. Its been years since I've had Croation Potato Salad. My grandmother was Croation so of course I grew up on it. Planning on having it for the 4th of July. It will bring back such memories of family get-togethers eating smoked ribs, BBQ Chicken, Smoked Kalbasa and other traditional Croation favorites.
